PRESS RELEASEChild Health Now Campaign:
Maternal and Child Health Joint Movement Launched in Indonesia

Twenty years ago, Indonesia Government ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This year becomes a special year in which the Indonesian Government is determined to realize the action for saving the mother and children from preventable death significantly. They showed their commitment by supporting The Maternal and Child Health National Joint Movement in Indonesia, which officially launched by Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare, Agung Laksono in Jakarta, June 23. This movement was held in conjunction with National Workshop "Non Government Organization Consolidation Toward MDGs 2015" which initiated by World Vision Indonesia and it's partner Wahana Visi Indonesia, together with other NGOs and institutions (Plan, CARE, Indonesia Lactation Center, Independence Youth Alliance, Community Empowerment Association, Indonesia Children Welfare Foundation, UN Millennium Campaign, UNICEF, National AIDS Commission, and Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia).

The movement also involved NGOs/CSOs and the Government at national level and representatives from ten provinces that have the worst maternal and child mortality rate in Indonesia. "It is a good momentum to bond the commitment from the government and every parties to prioritize children's rights to live, grow and develop, participate as well as to be protected," said Asteria Aritonang, Advocacy Director of World Vision Indonesia as The Committee Chairman of Joint Movement. She emphasized, "Maternal and child health issue is a challenge not only in Indonesia, but all over the world."

Further referring to her, the fact of the highest maternal and child mortality rate in Indonesia is very apprehensive. The children health status in Indonesia increased in the last 10 years; however the decrease is slow. If this condition continues, more children will die and Indonesia will not achieve the MDGs target in 2015. Every party has important and strategic role to improve maternal and child health status which is still not well coordinated recently both at national and local level. Through this joint movement, the decline in maternal and child mortality rates can be accelerated.

Indriyono Soesilo as a representative of Coordinating Ministry for People's Welfare stated, "This activity aims to strengthen the existing network and will become a starting point to synergize the network on maternal and child health in Indonesia to meet the MDGs' target in 2015."

Every party has important and strategic role to improve maternal and child health status which is still not well coordinated recently both at national and local level. Through this joint movement, the decline in maternal and child mortality rates can be accelerated.

This movement is a part of the series of Global Child Health Now Campaign in Indonesia. World Vision Indonesia recently has invited all parties, especially the world leaders and governments, to support The Joint Movement of "Child Health Now" to reduce child mortality rate with simple and low cost and effective solution.

As a continuation of The Joint Movement on Maternal and Child Health towards MDG 2015 at national level, the provincial workshop was held in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, on June 29-30. The similar workshops will be held in other 10 provinces that have the highest maternal and child mortality rate in Indonesia. Previously 1,080 people including staff, community members, children, government officers, and cadres from more than 40 ADPs in 10 provinces have also actively participated in Child Health Now Launch across Indonesia.

Every child has the right to live a healthy life beyond 5. Actions that we take today will shape their future. Let's make maternal and child health as a top priority NOW!
