West Kalimantan is one of the four Indonesian provinces in Kalimantan or Borneo Island. More than four million people inhabit the area which covers some 146,800 sq km.
Major ethnic groups include the Dayak, Malay and Chinese, which make up about 90 percent of the total population. The rest are Javanese, Bugis, Madurese, and other ethnicities. Its capital city Pontianak is located right on the Equator line. The borders of West Kalimantan roughly trace the mountain ranges surrounding the watershed of the Kapuas River, which drains most of the province. West Kalimantan is subdivided into two urban cities and 10 rural districts, 152 sub districts and 1,429 villages. About 29 percent of the population lives in the Pontianak area.
Poverty is still the major problem in this province that highly affects education, health care, and protection of children, families, and communities. World Vision came to serve the area back then in 1973 with a small program in community development in a very remote village in Sambas district.
In 2008, World Vision work with children, families, and communities in two urban cities (Pontianak and Singkawang) and six rural regencies (Pontianak District, Landak, Sanggau, Sekadau, Bengkayang, and Sambas) to overcome poverty, to help the community to secure their rights and live in all their fullness.
Urban Pontianak ADP History of World Vision in The Area Geography Background The city of Pontianak covers the area of 107.82 km2, which is only 0.07% of the whole area of West Kalimantan province. The physical condition of the city is generally flat, located between 0.1 to 1.5 meters above the sea level. Its strategic location at the harbour has been followed by its development as the centre of government, centre of business and main entry point to other parts of West Kalimantan province. The distance from Jakarta to Pontianak is approximately 700 kilometers. It can be reached by one hour travel by plane. There are plenty of flight schedules from Jakarta to Pontianak and vice versa. The condition of roads and highway in Pontianak city are relatively good. It will take around 8 hour drive to Sarawak, one of cities in Malay, from Pontianak. Currently, Urban Pontianak ADP focuses its minitry in the area of North Pontianak, South Pontianak, West Pontianak, and East Pontianak and Pontianak Kota with total of 24 villages. In the process of running some programs, the ADP built collaboration with quite number of local organization, such as Karya Sosial Pancur Kasih Foundation and Karya Kasih Foundation, especially in addressing health, education, and economic issues. Landak Child Survival Project, a special health project, also took place in the ADP during the year of 2000 up to 2004. Geography Background ADP Pontianak located in Pontianak district, province of West Kalimantan. It will take about an hour flight from Jakarta to Pontianak city and followed by another 90 minute drive by car to get to Pontianak district. There are several airline operated daily to Pontianak by Fokker 28 and Boeing 737. The condition of the road is generally adequate, except slight traffic in Pontianak city. Currently the ADP carries out some programs in 4 sub districts of Sungai Pinyuh, Toho, Mandor and Sengah Temila, which are located in 2 district of Pontianak and Landak. Sectoral Programming Through this ADP, World Vision execute four projects as follows: 1. Health Project with goal to have improved health and nutrition status of under fives children and pregnant women. 2. Education Project with goal to have improved quality if basic education in the areas of ADP. 3. Economic project with goal to increase income of the family in all areas of ADP. 4. Child Sponsorship Management Project with goal to have sponsorship system is well-operated as tool to transform children, families, communities and sponsors. Recent Emergency Sponsorship Staff Members Sanggau ADP History of World Vision in the Area Sanggau ADP Program has been commenced since the year 1977 to address education, economy as well as health problems in the area. The program is directed up to 2011. Geography Background Currently Sanggau ADP covers 5 sub districts (Tayan Hilir, Balai, Sekayam, Entikong, Nanga Mahap) as its main focus area of ministry. Those areas are located in 2 districts namely Sanggau and Sekadau. Sanggau ADP take serious concern on the improvement of community economics since 90.00% of the Sanggau-ADP assisted families income is under the minimum physical needs due to various issues among others. About 96.70% of the population depend their life on rubber plantations whereas the rubber price is not stabile and tends to be cheap. Around 92.50% of the assisted vilages suffer from famine for the last three months because the poor rice harvest and secondary crops are very limited. Aside from that, there is no income available apart from the agriculture section since 81.20% of the population do not have ability and knowledge apart from agriculture. Sectoral Programming Sponsorship Total Beneficiaries Staff Members Source of Funding Singkawang ADP History of World Vision in The Area Geography Background Singkawang city can be reached from the capital city of Indonesia, Jakarta, using aircraft Boeing 347 - 300. It takes an hour to Pontianak and then continued with 3 hour travel by car through a pretty good condition roadway. The distance between Jakarta and Singkawang is about 614 km. The ministry area of ADP Singkawang is in the radius of 60 km from Singkawang city to Bengkayang city. Amost all of the areas are accessible by motorcycle or car. They can be accessed within 1 until 2 hours. Singkawang city has multi ethnic population with the number of 170,473 people, while Bengkayang has around 205,877 population. Most people in Singkawang earn their living as labors (35,6%) and farmers (24,8%). Sectoral Programming Through this ADP, World Vision has a number of projects that fall within 3 sectors: 1. Education with goal to support girls and boys with their education tuition as well as to increase access and quality of education in Singkawang. 2. Health with goal to improve the nutritional status of children under five. 3. Child Sponsorship Management Project with goal to increase ADP Singkawang capacity in implementing development program to transform children, family, community and sponsors. Recent Emergency Sponsorship Total Beneficiaries Staff members Source of Funding Sambas ADP History of World Vision in the Area World Vision Indonesia started assessment for Sambas ADP on November 2006, followed by Design Project from March - December 2007. Starting from January 2008, the program is already on implementation phase I. Geography Background Sambas District is situated in the northeast part of West Kalimantan Province or between 2°08' and 0°33' North Latitude and between 108°39' and 110°04' East Longitude. Administratively, the borders of Sambas District are Serawak (East Malaysia) & Natuna Sea at the north, Bengkayang District and Singkawang City at the south, Natuna Sea at the west, and Bengkayang District & Serawak (East Malaysia) at the east. The Sambas District an area of 6,395.70 km2 width or about 4,36% of West Kalimantan Province. In 2005, the district consisted of 16 sub districts and 183 villages. But in 2006, a new sub-district, namely Tangaran which originally comes from Teluk Keramat sub-district, appeared. The widest sub district is Sajingan Besar with area of 1.391,20 km2 or 21,75% of Sambas District, while the smallest is Tekarang with area of 83,16 km2 or 4,44% of Sambas District. To reach Sambas, we have to take an hour flight from Jakarta to Pontianak. Then the journey will continue by land for about 5 up to 6 hours to Sambas District. Major ethnics in Sambas are Malays, Dayaknese and Chinese. Sectoral Programming Through this ADP, World Vision has a number of projects that fall within 5 sectors: 1.
