Papua is the eastern-most province in Indonesia covering more than 317,000 sq km (22% of Indonesia's total landmass) with total population of slightly above 2.5 millions. About a half of the population are migrants from other Indonesian islands, such as Java, Sulawesi and Maluku.
The provincial capital city is Jayapura. Almost tree-quarters of its area comprise of primary rainforest and Indonesia's highest mountain range. Papua is well known with its abundant natural resources but unfortunately it is not linear with the quality of human resource. Although rich in mineral and other natural resources, the main economic activities of Papua's residents remain subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry, together with fishing and hunting.
The people in the area struggle massive and complex problems in poverty as almost a half of the population is still under poverty line. Poverty affects all aspects in the lives of Papua people. The human development index is 62.9, lower than 69,6 of national (UNDP, 2005). About four out of 10 Papuans are still illiterate and seven out of 10 have never gone to primary school. Seven out of every 10 children aged 6 to 14 are in school. Child labor accounts for almost 10% of the children in Papua. This record makes Papua among the worst performers in education in Indonesia.
The nutrition status of children in Papua is very critical as more than 31% of under-five children are underweight (<-2 Z-score). The region also suffers enormously from the spread of HIV and AIDS.
If is very challenging to carry out any intervention to improve the living condition of the people as many people, particularly indigenous tribes, live in small clusters in very remote areas, including in the isolated highlands with altitude reaching some 2,000-3,000 meters.
World Vision started supporting the community in Papua in 1980s through small-scale community development projects in Jayawijaya highlands. The program has substantially grown over the last decades.
In 2008, World Vision supported integrated community development programs in Kurulu, Kurima, Karubaga, Eruwok, Pantai Kasuari, Maro, Boven Digul, Port Numbay and Keerom. World Vision has also implemented health programs to help fight TB and HIV & AIDS.
Through all the undertakings, World Vision strives together with children, family, and community to overcome poverty and to help facilitate them to reach their full potential.
