Papua is the eastern-most province in Indonesia covering more than 317,000 sq km (22% of Indonesia's total landmass) with total population of slightly above 2.5 millions. About a half of the population are migrants from other Indonesian islands, such as Java, Sulawesi and Maluku.

The provincial capital city is Jayapura. Almost tree-quarters of its area comprise of primary rainforest and Indonesia's highest mountain range. Papua is well known with its abundant natural resources but unfortunately it is not linear with the quality of human resource. Although rich in mineral and other natural resources, the main economic activities of Papua's residents remain subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry, together with fishing and hunting.

The people in the area struggle massive and complex problems in poverty as almost a half of the population is still under poverty line. Poverty affects all aspects in the lives of Papua people. The human development index is 62.9, lower than 69,6 of national (UNDP, 2005). About four out of 10 Papuans are still illiterate and seven out of 10 have never gone to primary school. Seven out of every 10 children aged 6 to 14 are in school. Child labor accounts for almost 10% of the children in Papua. This record makes Papua among the worst performers in education in Indonesia.

The nutrition status of children in Papua is very critical as more than 31% of under-five children are underweight (<-2 Z-score). The region also suffers enormously from the spread of HIV and AIDS.

If is very challenging to carry out any intervention to improve the living condition of the people as many people, particularly indigenous tribes, live in small clusters in very remote areas, including in the isolated highlands with altitude reaching some 2,000-3,000 meters.
World Vision started supporting the community in Papua in 1980s through small-scale community development projects in Jayawijaya highlands. The program has substantially grown over the last decades.

In 2008, World Vision supported integrated community development programs in Kurulu, Kurima, Karubaga, Eruwok, Pantai Kasuari, Maro, Boven Digul, Port Numbay and Keerom. World Vision has also implemented health programs to help fight TB and HIV & AIDS.

Through all the undertakings, World Vision strives together with children, family, and community to overcome poverty and to help facilitate them to reach their full potential.

Eruwok ADP

History of World Vision in The Area
The Girl Child Project was prepared, socialized and launched for the first time in the 1994 - 1995. The project ran smoothly up to 1997. After that period, it begun to prepare itself to change its specialization and status from the Special Project to the Area Development Program. Along with the changing specialization, the name and the scope of work were also changing. The name was not Girl Child Project anymore, but it became Eruwok. More over, the sponsored children are now not merely girls, but it recruits boys as well.

The name Eruwok was taken from the local LANI language. It consists of two separate words: "ER" which means "WE or US" and "WOK" which means: "WORK". Hence, "ERUWOK" means: "Let's work together". It is now known as Eruwok Area Development Program (Eruwok ADP) and is planned to run the project until 2015. It focused itself on programs that meet the children's intellectual, physical, social and spiritual needs.

Eruwok ADP supports 2000 sponsored children (girl and boy) of Elementary, Junior and Senior High School students. ADP aims to encourage them to finish their 9-year basic education and to train at least one applicable skill to be mastered that could be directly applied in their future.

Geography Background
ADP Eruwok is located in Jayawijaya Regency, in the province of West Papua. The project covers three sub districts: Tiom, Pirime/Pitriver and Makki. This Area Development Program is the continuing and developing program of the previous one, namely the Girl Child Project (GCP) that specialized itself on sponsoring only the girls.

Sectoral Programming
Education will be put in the first line. Talking about education, there are many aspects that could be pointed out, such as: many students do not have a chance to continue their study, many are dropped out, many are young married, the parents give low educational motivation to their children, many teachers do not take active role during the class sessions and the school infrastructures and facilities that are far bellow the Living Minimum Standard. Considering these factors, Eruwok is called out to settle the Child Study Center (CSC). In the moment time, the number of the CSC is quite limited. There is only one SCS in each village, but it is planned that in the future every club or group has their own SCS so that the students that have difficulty with their study could joint there and find the solution.

Beside the educational aspect, the economic aspect will also be considered. Economic Development Units are built and groups of families are settled to run the Economic Development Units. The Community Development and Small Enterprise Development Programs launched by World Vision is designed to support the community, which mostly lives under the Living Minimum Standard. The programs are holistically designed in order to meet the very urgent needs of the community, including the infrastructure needs.

Another aspect that is seriously considered by Eruwok Area Development Program is the children and community Health. The lack of medical services become the prominent problem in this area. However, community participation is always encouraged to fulfill the true meaning behind the name of Eruwok, which is 'let's work together'.

Recent Emergency
Most of Eruwok ADP area often troubled by landslide that caused the broke of access, but normally in 2 until 3 days the access will be functioned again.

Sponsorship
Up to January 2010, World Vision have sponsored 1,888 children.

Total Beneficiaries
A number of 217,466 individuals took and gained benefit from the project.
